1969 Chevelle Malibu / 350 +
I found this 1969 Chevelle 350 Malibu with TH350 transmission in the paper. It was in good shape for the seven grand he wanted. It needed a bunch of little things but the interior was in good shape, even had a new headliner. The body had fresh paint, but you could tell there were some rough spots, probably rust, that was painted over. It had been parked about 6 inches too close to a post which pushed in the front end and hood. The front end had been repaired and the hood replaced with a SS cowl hood but it still needed a new bumper.
I got a cheap second car, and a second job, and stared restoration. I fixed a bunch of small things to get it road worthy. Then I decided I wanted to have fun driving it while I was restoring it, so I put a little over three grand into the engine. It needed a new water pump, so while that was off I had a high performance Edelbrock cam with a gear drive put in. I kept the 650 – 4 barrel carb but put it on a Edelbrock high rise manifold that was matched to the cam. It turns out that the old manifold had square ports and the carb had round (or vise versa) so the four barrel carb was reduced to two. The linkage was messed up so it was only getting about three quarter throttle when the peddle was on the floor. You can imagine the difference the right intake and full throttle made! Add to that the new cam and Headman Headers into 2.5 exhaust with turbo mufflers and it really moves. I know it will never win races, but its plenty quick for me.
I have joined the local Chevelle club and I am really enjoying my ride. I Hope you like it to!
